Disguised Blessings In Guatemala

This month we have showed you various missions across the world through our willing guest writers. There are also many other ways that God is using humble people to share the Gospel. God has given each one of us a mission in this world, and I encourage you to follow God’s call on your life wherever He may lead you! Your mission field may not be in some far country, it might simply be reaching out to you neighbors and your community. God placed you where you are for a reason; don’t neglect His plan for you!

Wherever God places us, He blesses us. Sometimes those blessings aren’t where we expect them to be.

•being 1,680 miles from your family and home church = close friendships with Guatemalan sisters and other missionary ladies (who also don’t happen to live next door to mom or sis)

•toads and geckos living in your house = fewer mosquito bites

•many North American foods unavailable = learning to enjoy more Guatemalan foods

•cold showers = fastest way to cool off in the jungle

•learning Spanish at 25+ years of age = more sympathy for elementary students navigating the confusing world of English spelling and grammar rules

•being surrounded by Spanish = fresh determination to keep studying those pesky verb conjugations

•a drunk outside your window at 2:00 A.M.= a renewed realization of God’s constant protection and power to calm a wildly beating heart

•traveling by crowded chicken bus = a discovery that having your personal bubble quite deflated won’t harm you and you’ll likely experience an adventure

•faulty phone service = more time to interact with the people around you

•homesickness for your family = deeper dependence on God

Elsie serves in Guatemala with Mennonite Air Missions. She is a great friend of mine and I feel honored that she is willing to share her experiences in Guatemala with us! May you be richly blessed as you continue to serve the Lord, Elsie! -Ginger
